You know, I think you're mostly right. Avoiding conflict at all costs is unheatlhy and definitely leads to issues down the road, when conflicts can't simply be "done away with".

However, I do think that some people aren't worth arguing with, meaning that arguing with them will get you both nowhere, and the discussion will only widen the gap of conflict because one (or both) is stubborn or uncivilized when it comes to rational argument. I'm sure you'd agree with that. I'm also going to venture a guess that the people you described were the kind who were simply not worth engaging in argument.

I love arguing with you, because you and I can heatedly discuss an issue one day, and then be totally cool the next, because we realize the boundaries of an argument, as well as the context of the argument itself (i.e. within a sincere friendship).
